Experimental and Computational Investigation of Divergent Thrust Losses In Rocket Nozzles

    Get PDF
The nozzle is a critical component of any rocket engine because it transforms high pressure and high temperature (with sluggish net velocity) within the combustion chamber into high velocity but low pressure. Individually, the molecules in the mixed propellants have rapid velocity in the combustion chamber, but directions are randomly pointing in all directions. A convergent-divergent nozzle, also known as a CD nozzle, is fashioned like a tube with two bulging ends and a thin part in the center. This structure/design provides the nozzle with a balanced shape. By turning the flow\u27s heat energy into kinetic energy, the nozzle accelerates hot, pressured gas traveling past it in the axial (push) direction. Whereas the nozzle provides the acquired incremental thrust to the rocket engine, it also results in unwanted thrust losses. Out of which divergent losses in the divergent section are the primary foci of our research. Moreover, in this research paper, we produced verified results to reduce the thrust losses at the divergent sections of the nozzle by optimizing the nozzle with different half divergent angles

An Approach for Detection of Abnormality and its Severity Classification in Colour Fundus Images Nandhini V

Abstract-Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a common vision threatening complication of diabetic retinopathy and can lead to irreversible vision loss which can be assessed by detecting exudates (a type of bright lesion) in color fundus images. In this approach, an automatic and efficient method for the detection and classification of DME severity level is proposed. A feature extraction technique is introduced to capture the global characteristics of the fundus images and discriminate the normal from DME images. Clustering-based method is used to segment exudates. Using k-means clustering algorithm, the severity level of DME is determined. The performance of the proposed methodology and features are evaluated against several publicly available datasets

    ACADEMIC POSTGRADUATE HANDBOOK

Right from outset, the Proprietors of Covenant University noted the prime position of postgraduate training for the overall success of the institution and the rapid development of the nation. This was reinforced by the observed shortfall of about 56% in the cadre of qualified academic staff for the Nigerian University system. We were also driven by observed inconsistencies in postgraduate education in the country in such key considerations as duration, quality and need. There was another motivation regarding the quality of viable programmes in such fields as accountancy and architecture as well as the need to firm up on the research thrust to reflect the changing paradigms. These realities led to the proposal to Senate on November 26, 2003, to establish the School of Postgraduate Studies. The Vision and Mission of the School as presented below: Vision To be a leading centre for postgraduate training for the needs of contemporary Africa. Mission To produce very high quality postgraduates by engaging best practices in programme, research and services, deploying life applicable, life promoting as well as cutting-edge techniques in our services and delivery. Objectives Among other things, the objectives of the School have been to: i. develop in the students, the spirit of inquiry through training in research in an atmosphere of intellectuals’ independence and creativity re enforced with a strong sense of team work; ii. foster through instruction, a deeper understanding of key academic concepts and applying fundamental ideas to solve problems of the society; 3 iii. provide training in research for future academics and other high calibre personnel in research and knowledge based organizations; and iv. provide both short and long-term training opportunities to produce high level manpower needed for the rapid development of the nation. These vision, mission and objectives are driven by Committee of the School and fully supported by the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor. Even before the National Universities Commission (NUC) set up the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards for Postgraduate Programmes in Nigeria, the School had put in place measures to ensure quality and standards. One such measure has been our “Double Filter” mechanism for thesis processing. This involved the use of Assessors and Examiners for each candidate. We have also emphasized lecture delivery in modular forms. We have attracted the very best of brains from within and outside the country to enrich the quality of our postgraduate training. Many of the renowned scholars in this audience have assisted us in this regard as Visiting Professors, Assessors and Examiners. We remain ever grateful. The cumulative effect of our strategies has been excellence all the way starting from our staff development efforts in the early days. Indeed, our first Ph.D graduate won the prestigious Microsoft Award in Software development. Many of our graduates have won the Fulbright and many other competitive fellowships. By 2009, the NUC visited our School of Postgraduate Studies and granted permission to all our 22 Departments and 32 programmes to run postgraduate courses even for the external context. We have since opened our doors to the world to come to learn and partner with us to birth the critical change we all desire. Covenant University has just made a turn over the first decade. In the last ten years, we laid the foundation for excellence as a prelude to the World-class consciousness. In this new decade, we have a mandate to make it to be the list of the top 10 universities in the world. We are aware that research is a key driver of this agenda. There is hardly any meaningful research without a robust postgraduate programme. Such a programme must run on well-defined 4 parameters. That explains our enthusiasm to produce a handbook of the School of Postgraduate Studies. We express gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the Management of Covenant University for providing the needed support in the process of producing this handbook

A Contribution to the Study of Exit Flow Angle in Radial Turbines

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT The emergence and evolution of relative whirling motions in the exducer region of an Inward Flow Radial Turbine is discussed. Existing models of relative motion are reviewed and expanded by consideration of the effect of centrifugal forces differences arising from velocity gradients. It is shown that the often observed phenomenon of outlet overturn/underturn is inherent to the use of straight-helix exducers. Explicit mathematical relationships between exit velocities and radius are not available. If, however, such relationships could be considered linear, it is shown that two new reference radii may be identified such that the net outlet properties can be measured or computed at these locations as lump parameters. These radii are different from the often used hydraulic radius. The new models and reference radii are verified using published experimental data

This research analyzes the effectiveness of theme-rheme negotiation with cooperative learning method in improving the students’ competence in developing the paragraph of discussion texts and the effectiveness of teaching learning activities of paragraph writing class. This classroom action research was conducted in the English Department of Tidar University of Magelang in the academic year of 2011/2012. The subjects of this research were the fourth semester students who took writing III. To collect the research data, the writer used writing test, observation and interview while to analyze the data, she used descriptive statistics for quantitative data and constant comparative method which consisted of four stages for qualitative data. The first result shows that implementing theme rheme negotiation with cooperative learning method can improve the students’ competence in developing the paragraph of discussion texts. It can be seen from the results of writing tests. Based on Brown and Bailey’s theory in Brown (2004), it can be seen that the mean score of organization element in pre-cycle is 10.85, first cycle is 15.62, second cycle is 17.31 and the third cycle is 17.53. The second result shows that there is improvement of the effectiveness of teaching- learning activity of writing class by implementing TP-CL. The improvement can be seen from the indicators of effective teaching based on Blum in Nunan and Lamb (1996) and Creemer’s theory (1994). The results suggest that writing lecturers should introduce text-types to the students as well as how to develop the paragraph in order that they can write paragraphs coherently and various themes in order that they can write the paragraph artistically. In addition to that, the application of various cooperative learning methods can make the teaching-learning process effective. Keywords : classroom action research, theme-rheme, cooperative learning,  paragraph developmen
